Fluid Geometricity

What I found when I stepped into the shop was this duality of a dress: a neon number that was not garish, remarkable in its rigid three-dimesionality and yet somehow still fluid as it oozed on my frame like a bouncing tear-drop. The Drip Bounce tunic it is aptly christened, for obvious reasons: as much a box is as outside the box, it bounces with the gait like a slinky. The dress was a case study, as only Miyake knows how, in how colour binary elevates the visual impact of shape.

Fukinsei: Behind Wabi-Sabi

A few weeks ago, I shared some thoughts on the Japanese aesthetic concept of Wabi-Sabi and how re-calibrating my perspective to practice Wabi-Sabi an ideal for living has not only brought more beauty into my life, but been essential to my survival. Now, producer Josh Gwynn and I share with you behind the scenes action from that shoot. The short film, Fukinsei, is a non-linear irregularity; an experiment in story telling both visual and narrative. What better way to share the tenets of an aesthetic concept that aspires to asymmetry and imperfection than by making a piece that is itself, well, quite Wabi-Sabi.

Wabi-Sabi: As Is Fashion So Is Life

Pleats are made by folding, contorting as it were. They are sealed in through the application of immense heat. From compression, fabric is imbued with poetic buoyancy. It has been that sort of year for me indeed. I have been pressed through some intense situations and the mercury has risen from fierce heat of living.

Bessie And The Lamb: A Parable In 5 Gears

My personal parable has nothing to do with wild horses and dodging the draft. My story is of the simple misfortune of my car engine locking on me in the middle of the road, and that misfortune giving me the good fortune of knowing the kindness of a friend.

The Fire And The Rose (or Let Nothing You Dismay)

The only savior from the burn of a half-baked existence is the sort of fire that shifts our shape and molds our mettle. Whenever the year comes to its Gregorian end, we exchange grand overtures, symphonically declaring what a good year the one ahead will be for us all. What we rarely mention is that shit is bound cloud the rivers of joy despite our most valiant efforts. What we hardly discuss is the notion that triumph and defeat are one and the same.

Marrakech is Magic

“As you set out for Ithaka, ask that the voyage is a long one…”
The journey to Marrakech by way of the desert took us 3 days. By the time we made it to Marrakech, the final leg of my “30 Becomes Her Tour” as I dubbed this year’s round of intercontinental gallivanting, we were undoubtedly rich in our knowledge of Morocco. The magic was all in the getting there…

Frye Day

As today is Friday, corny though it may sound, I have decided to share some photos from The Frye Company’s flagship store opening in Atlanta from a few weeks back. The leather apparel company, established in 1886, has opened up shop in Atlanta’s new play ground, Ponce City Market. Vogue magazine co-sponsored the well-attended evening of cocktails, canapés and bootstraps.

The Dizziness of A Soul Made Visible Sans Artifice

“The dizziness of a soul made visible by artifice” are the words poet Stéphane Mallarmé employed to describe of art of Modern Dance pioneer Loie Fuller… Everything in this dizzying world turns in the gyre, like Ms. Fuller herself, hopefully spinning ever toward light.
